Campbelltown City HC wins star visit

As announced by Sandra Sully as part of her latest Destination Hockey News Update, Campbelltown City Hockey Club in New South Wales will be the excited recipients of a visit from a member of the Kookaburras or Hockeyroos after they were selected as the winning club from all those that took part in Destination Hockey and National Hockey Week in 2016.

Campbelltown City Hockey Club, established in 1973, is one of the foundation clubs for hockey in the Campbelltown / Macarthur area of South Western Sydney.

David Scott, the club’s secretary, picks up the story….

“Our club has always retained a family focus and emphasises that hockey is a fun sport to be enjoyed by the whole family.

“Like many small clubs across Australia with the shift to synthetic turf at regional centres and the move away from the “local” park we have struggled to attract new young players. With our recruitment for 2016 we adopted the Hockey Australia “Hookin2Hockey” program and promoted it locally with some success. We also adopted the “Destination Hockey” program on its introduction.

“To celebrate National Hockey Week in June last year our junior teams dressed up for training with each age group deciding on a theme. The under sevens wore pyjamas, nines tutu’s and capes, elevens jerseys, thirteens onesies and the fifteens dressed as fairies with our coaches and some parents also joining in. Our sponsor Yogurtland also chipped in with tubs of frozen yoghurt for an after-training treat.

“It was a great success with many laughs and everyone enjoying the night. It also demonstrated to our junior players that hockey had a fun social aspect and that it was not just drills and tactics, we all look forward to future National Hockey Weeks.”

As well as taking part in National Hockey Week, Campbelltown City registered with the Destination Hockey program and completed the post-event online questionnaire. The club was selected at random from the 262 clubs and associations that registered for Destination hockey.

Well done from everyone at Hockey Australia. We will look forward to bringing an international hockey star to the club in the coming months.

Details of National Hockey Week 2017 are still in the planning stages and will be announced as we get closer to the hockey season.
